Greetings West River AHEC Partner,

The West River Area Health Education Center has been committed to expanding the healthcare workforce in western South Dakota since its inception in the fall of 2019. Our mission at West River AHEC is to create collaborations and programs which inspire individuals to pursue healthcare careers and equip healthcare professionals to serve in rural and underserved communities throughout western South Dakota. Currently, we are putting a spotlight on the health care needs of those living in rural communities in South Dakota. For our rural neighbors, access to healthcare is not always a given. We want to ensure all South Dakotans have access to healthcare, regardless of where they live. To do this, we are connecting students to health career pathways with an emphasis on returning to serve the communities that first served them. West River AHEC is working to increase HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) for western South Dakota high schools. This student led organization engages students interested in health science and encourages hands on learning through competition at both the state and national levels. West River AHEC wants to help ensure all students have equal opportunities for participation in a HOSA chapter. From reduced membership fees to travel scholarships, more students will have the opportunity for exploring the health sciences pathway.
