I am a 25-year-old Biomedical Engineering student here at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, graduating in the spring of 2023. I plan to pursue a career in medicine as an MD. I was born and raised in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, which is where I live currently and raise my two young sons! Outside of school you can find me outdoors, typically hiking or going for a drive to enjoy the scenery.

We are excited that Matie chose to be a part of AHEC Scholars and appreciate the perspective she brings with a background in surgical technology and healthcare! The AHEC Scholars program is designed for college-level health profession students interested in supplementing their education by gaining relevant knowledge and experiences in rural and underserved areas of SD. Program activities cover the following six Core Topics: Interprofessional Education, Behavioral Health Integration, Social Determinants of Health, Cultural Competency, Practice Transformation, and Current and Emerging Health Issues.
